Just only 2 percent of its demand of Bangladesh meets from the domestic production of raw cotton. In our country, cotton is steadily losing acreage to other competing crops like potato, maize, flowers, vegetables and rice as cotton cultivation is susceptible to excessive rainfalls/floods and pest infestations. Lack of short duration, high yielding and pest tolerant varieties and relatively low market price for cotton and other competing crops are major constraint affecting cotton cultivation. Bangladesh, has now replaced Turkey as the second biggest buyer of cotton in the world, the largest buyer being China. Bangladesh’s apparel industry relies heavily on cotton-based yarns as knitwear and denims account for nearly three-fourths of the country’s earnings from apparel export that amounted to $12.5 billion last year. Uzbekistan and CIS countries are the major sources of cotton for Bangladeshi spinners. The procurement of US cotton by Bangladeshi importers has increased considerably over the last year.
